Most insulated glass carries a date code stamped into the spacer bar, readable through the edge of the pane. It tells us whether a unit is inside a manufacturer warranty, whether the whole house was done at once, and whether we are dealing with original glass or storm-cycle replacement. We read it before we price anything.

Measure the opening, not the window in it
We measure the rough opening at head, centre and sill, check both diagonals for square, and record the reveal gap on all four sides. That is how an out-of-square frame gets caught before it becomes a warranty call. If the existing unit was ordered to the wrong size, copying it would repeat the error.

My windows were replaced after the 2020 derecho. Why are they already failing?
Usually because of how they were installed rather than what was installed. A great deal of window work in Cedar Rapids happened inside a short window of time with crews working at speed, some of them from out of state.
The three faults we find most often are frames set out of square, no sill pan under the unit, and standard expanding foam packed into the jamb cavity, which keeps growing and bows the frame until the sash binds. None of those show up in the first year. All of them show up in year four or five.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Cedar Rapids?
Cedar Rapids runs its own Building Services department, and permit requirements depend on the scope of the work. Cutting a new opening, changing an opening size, or structural work such as a new egress window in a foundation wall is a different matter from swapping a sash in an existing frame.
In the smaller towns around the metro, several of them use the Linn County Building Division under 28E agreements instead. We will tell you which authority applies to your address and what it will want.
Does Iowa's energy code set a minimum U-factor for replacement windows?
Not for an existing house. Iowa adopts the 2012 IECC residential provisions under rule 661-303.2, and the state amends section R101.2 so that remodeling and renovation of one- and two-family dwellings sit outside the code's scope. New construction in Linn County is held to a fenestration U-factor of 0.32 under Table 402.1.1. On a retrofit, nobody checks.
That means the NFRC label on the glass is the only thing keeping a supplier honest, and it is why we leave the labels on until you have read them.
Are impact-rated windows worth it in Iowa?
For most houses, no. Impact ratings exist for coastal windborne-debris regions, and Iowa has none, no high-velocity hurricane zone, and no state product approval scheme. What the National Weather Service documented across Benton, Linn, Jones, Cedar and Clinton counties on 10 August 2020 was straight-line wind in the 100 to 130 mile per hour range, with maximums estimated near 140.
Wind at those speeds fails windows through pressure and anchorage. Design pressure rating, a real sill pan and fasteners landed in framing matter far more than laminated glass, and cost far less.
Does a fogged window mean I need a whole new window?
Almost never. Fog between the panes means the edge seal on the sealed glass unit has failed and moisture has reached the cavity. On most frames the unit can be templated, ordered to match the original thickness, low-E surface and spacer, and set into the existing sash without disturbing trim, drywall or siding.
The exceptions are sash welded around the glass, obsolete profiles with no available glazing bead, and frames that are themselves cracked or racked. We check which of those you have before quoting.
What size window does a basement bedroom need?
The Linn County Building Division applies IRC section R310. The minimum net clear opening is 5.7 square feet, with a 5.0 square foot exception where the sill sits no more than 44 inches above or below the adjacent ground.
Minimum clear height is 24 inches, minimum clear width is 20 inches, and the sill can be no more than 44 inches above the finished floor. The arithmetic catches people out: at only 20 inches of width you need 41 inches of height, and at only 24 inches of height you need 34 and a quarter inches of width.
